Message from our President / Chief Executive Officer
Dear Community Member, Welcome to Memorial Hospital's Internet Pages. I hope you find our web site informative and useful in your search for information about our physicians, facilities and services. I'd like to take the opportunity to answer several questions that I'm often askedabout Memorial Hospital. One of the most common questions is, "How do hospitals measure their quality performance?" Memorial Hospital continually monitors many different measures of quality, from how well we follow national protocols to how our patients feel about their care. But our internal measurements are far from the whole story; we are also auditedby two important outside groups: the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the State of Pennsylvania. Both organizations audit us to similar quality standardsand we routinely do very well in these audits. In fact, we're quite proud to report that Memorial Hospital's employees, physicians and trustees recently earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission. This is the highest level of approval granted by JCAHO and it is valid for a three-year period. Let me assure you, though, that this three-year accreditation isn't a license to sit back and relax. The Joint Commission can and does arrive, unannounced, at any time to make sure we're staying on our toes and in compliance with the quality standards. Participating in the Joint Commission accreditation process is voluntary and, while it is a tough test, we view the process of obtaining this accreditation as a key step in achieving and maintaining our commitment to qualityand safety. The State of Pennsylvania also conducts a very thorough and comprehensive audit of the facility to assure the members of the community that Memorial is a quality healthcare organization deserving of its license to operate. The State conducts its audit every two years and they too, can walk in the doors without notice. Another common question is, "Who owns Memorial Hospital?" Memorial Hospital Inc. is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation licensed by the State of Pennsylvania as an independent community hospital. Simply stated, the community owns Memorial Hospital. The community built Memorial and they continue to manage it.Our hospital has been in existence since 1959 and was founded as a result of a community membership drive. The thirty trustees of the Memorial Hospital Board of Directors are members of the community we serve. These volunteers offer their time and expertise to the key tasks of hiring competent management, approving a long-term plan, credentialing physicians to practice according to their training, and assuring financial accountability of the hospital's assets. To do that, they stay educated and informed on the issues facing the medical community and participate actively in regular board and committee meetings. "Does Memorial Hospital employ physicians?" Yes, we do, but not until the Spring of 2008. Our Board responded to the community's need for more physicians by establishing Community Health Associates LLC, a new company that will provide another employment choice for physicians to come into our area and provide healthcare services. The Board has also approved a new policy for recruitment and retention of physicians as a long-range strategy to offer medical care in our community. Through this policy we will be able to recruit physicians to establish their practices here, with or without assistance from Memorial Hospital. Therefore, for the first time, Memorial Hospital does employ physicians. Click here to see these physicians. All three leadership groups of the hospital - the board, medical staff and administration - continuously work together to identify and direct the priorities of the hospital through the development and implementation of strategic plans within the scope of our mission. Thank you for your interest in your community hospital. I would like to assure you, on behalf of the hundreds of your neighbors who make it their life's work to provide you with a strong, effective community hospital, that we at Memorial Hospital will do our best to meet and exceed your expectations - now and into the future. Sincerely, Gary A. Baker Gary A. Baker was
