Baldness
Baldness is a hereditary condition which affects about 30 million
American men each year. Transplants and a new drug can help some men. But learn
the truth before you spend time or money on untested "cures."
You inherit baldness from your parents. If you have "baldness"
genes, at a certain point your hair follicles (the sight of the hair
root) start shrinking, producing weaker hair. Eventually the follicles are unable
to produce any significant hair at all. Because the life of hair is about 4-5
years, it takes several years for balding to be completed.
In a transplant operation, a small plug of hair, its surrounding
glands, and shaft are moved from one part of your head to another. In 1986,
more than 12,000 American men had hair transplants. Minoxidi1, a recently
approved drug (also known as "Rogaine"), stops hair loss in some men
who are just starting to lose their hair. It is rubbed on the scalp, and must
be used continuously or new hair will fall out. Whether or not you wish to seek
treatment for baldness, it's important to remember that many people find baldness
very appealing!
