Mammotome The Mammotome Breast Biopsy System, a minimally invasive breast biopsy, helps Memorial Hospital doctors diagnose if breast abnormalities are cancerous. "Biopsies with the Mammotome are performed in less than an hour, require no stitches and save women a trip to the operating room," says Dr. Meade Palmer a general surgeon on Memorial Hospitals medical staff. According to Dr. Palmer, the Mammotome system offers women a minimally invasive alternative to an open surgical biopsy, the most common method, which can leave scarring and result in disfigurement of the breast. "With the Mammotome Breast Biopsy System, we can more easily biopsy all kinds of breast abnormalities. This kind of breast biopsy is easier on the patient, is less time consuming and helps us make a highly accurate diagnosis," said Dr. Palmer. Procedures with the Mammotome system involve the one-time insertion of a probe directly into the area of the breast that appeared suspicious based on a physical exam or an abnormal mammogram finding. The doctor guides the probe through the use of ultrasound or stereotactic imaging systems. Once inside, the Mammotome gently vacuums out suspicious tissue for analysis. The Mammotome Breast Biopsy System is available at Memorial Hospital twice a month on an outpatient basis. Talk to your doctor to see if this system is right for you. A referral from a physician is necessary to take advantage of this breakthrough technology that should soon become the gold standard for breast biopsies. Related Pages: The Radiology Information
