Seven Minute Shoulder Massage

ATTITUDE: Giving and caring.

POSITION OF RECEIVER: Seated, hands in lap, feet flat on the floor.

TECHNIQUE SUMMARY: General instructions: use pads of fingers, not fingertips.

TO START: Place hands on shoulders and both giver and receiver take a deep breath in and out.

  1. Repeat 6x
Shoulder kneading: gauge pressure - as heavy as comfortable and enjoyable to the receiver.

  2. Repeat 4x
Thumbs on top shoulders: use pressure points or small circles start at base of neck and move out toward shoulder.

  3. Repeat 6x
    Stroking between scapulas: alternate hands.

  4. Repeat 4x
Thumbs between scapulas: like pressing buttons.

  5. Repeat 6x
Neck kneading: bend head forward, support forehead with left hand. Kneed back of neck with right hand, using about 2/3 pressure.

  6. Repeat 1
Occipital spots: ear to ear, return.

  7. Repeat 1
Neck lift: cradle head, bring to neutral; gently (but firmly) lift up, release gradually.

  8. Repeat 4
Deltoid squeeze: Shoulders to elbows and back.

  9. Repeat 4
Brush off or walk hands: move from head to elbows, then "shake off the extra energy" before repeating. This is an Eastern technique to "smooth the energy flow".

TIME: This massage is most energizing when performed in approximately seven minutes or less. The receiver will feel tranquil, yet energized by these techniques.

OBSERVATIONS: Receiver exhibits: Shallow breathing: remind the receiver to "breathe normally". Tenderness or withdrawing from touch: Lighten your touch. Ask receiver to concentrate on breathing to promote relaxation.

The seven-minute timing and the convenience of being seated, fully dressed makes this massage ideal during breaks at work.
