Same Day Surgery Suite

Memorial Hospital's ten-bed Same Day Surgery Suite provides a convenient and comfortable environment for outpatient surgery patients who will be in and out of the hospital in the same day.

Surgical procedures which may qualify for same day surgery include, but are not limited to:

tonsillectomy
hernia repair
tendon repair
closed reduction of fractures
arthroscopic (knee) examination and repair
circumcision
hemorrhoidectomies
laparoscopic cholecystectomies (gall bladder removal)
ovarian cystectomies
D&Cs
breast biopsy
carpal tunnel surgery
knee arthroscopy
colonoscopy
gastroscope
foot bunion surgery
laparoscope
myringotomy (ear tube insertion)
tubal ligations

These are just a few examples of the types of procedures that are performed by surgeons on a same day basis. Additional patient services provided by the Same Day Surgery Suite at Memorial Hospital include:

pre-admission screening

instructions about post-surgery care at home

follow up telephone calls to monitor recovery and answer questions

Same day surgeries include prompt admission and simplified discharge procedures, obvious cost effectiveness, translating into lower medical expense for the patient, and less time spent separated from family and home. In fact, family members or significant others are encouraged to participate in the patient's surgical / hospital experience during pre-admission testing, the admission process and again as soon as possible after surgery, so that the only time a patient needs to be separated from the comfort of familiar faces is during surgery and in the main recovery room. Participation is also encouraged in patients' postoperative care, in discharge planning, and can facilitate the enhancement of a patient's recovery and sense of well being while returning to the normal routines of daily life.

Once the same day patient has returned home, follow up calls will be made by a registered nurse or certified nurses' aide to monitor the patient's progress, problems or complaints and evaluate the patients' surgical experience and outcome, benefitting not only the patient, but the overall quality of patient care at Memorial Hospital.
