Surgery and Anesthesia
SURGERY
Today, in keeping with the latest trend toward maximizing patients' comfort
and convenience and shortening hospital stays, Memorial Hospital performs
an increasingly broad range of outpatient, same
day and inpatient surgeries. Combined with advanced medical/surgical/anesthetic
technologies, as always, the personal involvement of our staff members
ensures you receive the attention, care and consideration that would naturally
be given to family, neighbors and friends.
TYPES OF SURGERY
From pre-admission
testing and diagnostic procedures, areas of surgery routinely performed
include:
- GENERAL SURGERY,
including appendectomy, hernia repair, gall bladder, bowel surgery,
mastectomy and lumpectomy.
- DIAGNOSTIC SURGERY,
including bone marrow aspirations, liver, breast and other tissue biopsies.
- EAR, NOSE AND THROAT
SURGERY, including tonsillectomies.
- ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES
for examination of the esophagus and stomach (gastroscopy), lungs (bronchoscopy),
bowel (colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy), and knee (arthroscopy).
- LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY,
which is perhaps the most progressive of recent surgical developments,
involves relatively small incisions and the use of a scope and video
screen viewing for performing surgical procedures. A broad range of
surgeries, which in the past involved a large incision and longer hospital
stays can now be performed laparoscopically, such as gall bladder removal,
tubal ligations, ovarian cystectomies, and hernia repair.
- LITHOTRIPSY
- Treating kidney stones through lithotripsy is a very precise practice
and involves elements of technology that have revolutionized this field.
The lithotripsy system generates low energy shock wave impulses that
cause kidney stones to become fragmented. Lithotripsy makes it possible
to "crush" kidney stones from outside the body minimizing the need for
other more intrusive medical intervention. The results of lithotripsy
are the spontaneous passing of the sand-like particles with minimum
discomfort.
- OB-GYN SURGERIES
including D&C, hysterectomy and cesarean section.
- ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY
such as joint replacements, carpal tunnel release, fracture and spinal
surgeries.
- THORACIC SURGERY
including lobectomies (removal of a portion of the lung), thoracotomies
(chest surgeries) and thorascopies (chest examinations).
- UROLOGICAL SURGERY
including cystoscope, transurethral resection of tumors, prostatectomy
and bladder suspension.
ANESTHESIOLOGY
The Anesthesia Department is an integral part of the surgical team
at Memorial Hospital. Appropriate studies and laboratory tests are done
to ascertain the safest and most suitable anesthetic technique for the procedure
at hand. The method of anesthetic selected is then discussed with the patient
to assure complete understanding of the procedure and to answer any questions
the patient may have. Anesthesia is then carried out using modern anesthetic
technology and equipment best suited for each individual patient.
