Memorial Hospital Hospice recently completed its thirteenth year of offering Good
Grief Day Camp at the Spiritual Life Center at the Vesper Church in Standing Stone.
According to Trudy Ventello, LSW, there were 38 campers, 4 junior counselors,
16 volunteers, and 2 facilitators: a whopping total of 60 people. "The activities
go back and forth between inside and outside and we had to dodge some rain, but
these kids made a Memory Book, participated in a Memorial Service and otherwise
learned that many other children have had the same unfortunate circumstance as
they in losing someone they love," says Ventello. "They also had fun."
There were games to be played, people to meet, worksheets to complete and pictures to be taken.
Written messages to their loved one were buried in the ground under a beautiful burning
bush that was planted at the Vesper Church. T-shirts were signed, pizza and freeze pops
were consumed, and everyone got soaked with torrential rain at the end of the day.
"Many, many thanks to the support of Rev. Bob Martin and his Vesper Church Community,
to the junior and older, previous camper-counselors that continue to come back year after,
the hospice volunteers and some tag along friends; Jeff Russell for his fantastic picture
taking and collage-making, and to the kids brave enough to share their stories and lend
their support to their new friends," Ventello said.
